Client profile

OSB Group is a leading specialist mortgage lender in the UK, operating through a house of brands including Precise, InterBay, and Rely. They provide specialist lending products in the buy-to-let, residential, and commercial mortgage markets, alongside savings products. As an organisation committed to being a "bank with the soul of a fintech," OSB Group is currently undergoing a multi-year digital transformation to modernise its technical foundations and scale its agile capabilities.

Transforming Specialist Lending

OSB Group is prioritising a "digital-first" strategy to redefine intermediary support. Through the launch of the 'Leading with AI' programme with Cambridge Spark, they are empowering 50 of their leaders to blend human expertise with AI-driven capability. This collaboration builds the data literacy and strategic vision needed to keep OSB at the forefront of innovation, delivering smarter, faster, and safer lending solutions.

As a market leader in specialist lending, OSB Group faced a pivotal moment in its digital evolution. While the bank had already committed to a multi-year transformation to modernise its technical foundations, the leadership recognised that technology alone wasn't a silver bullet. The real challenge lay in leadership fluency.

"As leaders in a business, we need to understand and be able to embrace new technology. We need to make decisions sensibly about how we can leverage that and make it work."

Andy Golding, Group CEO

To move from a traditional manual lender to a scaled, agile business, the executive team needed to deeply understand how to leverage AI to drive "simpler, smarter, and quicker" interactions for mortgage brokers and customers.

A Bespoke "Leading with AI" Programme

OSB Group partnered with Cambridge Spark to launch a comprehensive "Leading with AI" programme. This initiative brought together 50 of the group’s most senior leaders for an immersive learning experience designed to level-set understanding and spark collaborative innovation.

The curriculum was designed to move beyond theoretical buzzwords, focusing instead on practical business cases and the "art of the possible." By immersing the team in the "Silicon Fen" ecosystem, the programme provided a high-pressure, high-reward environment for strategic thinking.

  • Immersive Masterclasses: Engaging with experts to understand the "art of the possible" with AI and debunking industry myths.

  • Capstone Projects: Teams worked on real business problems, developing business cases intended to deliver tangible ROI

  • Collaborative Learning: The programme provided a unique space for leaders from across different departments to align on a unified AI strategy.

"I'm really excited that this programme will bring us together as a group of senior leaders to learn more about each other, as well as to learn more about the topic... this is a technology that's growing exponentially faster than anything I've seen in my career in tech."

Building a Human-Centric AI Roadmap

The residency served as a catalyst for cultural and operational shifts within the bank. Rather than viewing AI as a tool for headcount reduction, the leadership focused on human-centric automation, using technology to handle manual tasks so their specialists could focus on complex, high-value customer needs.

Key insights from the leadership included:

  • Human-Centric AI: The focus remained on how AI can enhance, rather than replace, the vital "human touch" in specialist lending.

  • Strategic Fluency: Leadership fluency in AI is critical for making sensible decisions and removing fear within the workforce.

  • Operational Efficiency: Identifying opportunities to use AI for fraud detection, process automation, and improved decision science.

A Future-Fit Organisation

The collaboration between OSB Group and Cambridge Spark demonstrates that successful digital transformation starts at the top. By investing in leadership capability, OSB Group isn't just reacting to the market, they are shaping it.

They are now uniquely positioned to deliver innovative products to market faster, provide superior broker experiences, and maintain their status as the UK’s leading visionary in specialist banking.

"You're either riding the technology wave in front of the wave or you're getting wiped out by it. So for me, it's making sure that we're there, we're at the forefront, and we're leveraging all the latest technology to get our innovative products to market much sooner."
