Client Profile

As one of the top five children’s hospitals globally, GOSH is known as an international centre of excellence in child healthcare. Core to its operations are its people, who are the head, the heart, the hands and the face of GOSH. They make the hospital what it is and allow its clinicians to do extraordinary things.

quotes

“You can look around the organisation now and the amount of people you will see who started off as an apprentice… and are now becoming more and more senior is testament to the programme.”

Zaman Hussain, Chief Data Officer at GOSH

Empowering Data-Driven Transformation in Healthcare

To drive meaningful, organisation-wide change, Great Ormond Street Hospital recognised that equipping its workforce with the right blend of technical and non-technical skills was essential. Working closely with Cambridge Spark, the Trust has implemented a tailored apprenticeship pathway that spans from entry-level programmes up to advanced Level 6 and 7 qualifications in data science and AI.

A standout factor behind the programme’s success has been strong executive buy-in. From day one, the Chief Data Officer has championed the initiative, ensuring alignment with the Trust’s long-term strategy. This support has catalysed the recruitment of new data roles and sparked a culture shift across departments, where apprentices are seen as vital contributors to innovation.

As one apprentice shared, the programme has “changed my mindset” about data, shifting the focus from passive handling to active, value-driven analysis. With AI models poised to support safe and effective clinical care, including for critically ill newborns, the impact of data literacy is both practical and profound.

Perhaps most inspiring is the long-term career progression the programme enables. Many of today’s data leaders within the Trust began their journey as apprentices, now advancing into senior roles and shaping the future of healthcare.

The response across teams has been overwhelmingly positive, with growing interest and excitement about how data can transform services.

With Cambridge Spark as a collaborative and adaptable partner, this Trust is setting a benchmark for digital transformation in the public sector.
