The Level 4 Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation Practitioner is a new UK apprenticeship standard approved by Skills England on December 10, 2025. Officially designated as Standard ST1512, it is designed for professionals implementing practical AI tools and automated workflows to improve business efficiency. It differs significantly from the Data Analyst Level 4, focusing on operational automation rather than data science.
The AI and Automation Practitioner (ST1512) is a Level 4 apprenticeship standard that trains employees to identify, design, and implement automated workflows using AI tools. Unlike coding-heavy roles, this standard focuses on "low-code/no-code" implementation, ethics, and operational efficiency. It was developed to address the "AI implementation gap" in UK businesses.
This is the most common confusion in the market. The Data Analyst standard focuses on insight, while the AI Practitioner standard focuses on action.

Typical Job Titles:
The curriculum aligns with the Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours (KSBs) mandated by Skills England:
Skills England identified a gap between "building AI" (engineering) and "using AI" (general workforce). Previous apprenticeships were either too technical (DevOps/Data Science) or too generic. ST1512 was authored to create a workforce capable of deploying existing AI tools immediately to generate ROI for SMEs and Enterprises.
Agentic AI refers to AI systems that can take independent action to complete a goal, rather than just generating text or images. In this apprenticeship, learners build "Agents" that can autonomously trigger next steps—such as reading an email, categorising it, updating a CRM, and drafting a reply—without human intervention.
